What makes someone decide to paddle a canoe 260 miles down a river for three days non-stop? That is a good question and one I am attempting to figure out. I have always said the Journey is the Destination and I am about to take that quote to the extreme. We started training this week consisting of 6 to 10 miles on Town Lake three days a week and between 15 and 45 miles on the rivers on the weekends. This weekend we will paddle from Palmetto to Gonzalez for about 27 miles. I talked to Ginsie and Debbie last night and they said we will encounter at least one log jam and a dam on this paddle and so the adventure begins.
We will cover every stretch of the river between now and June 14th and then we will paddle non-stop from June 14th to June 17th. We have to take everything we need in the boat including any food, clothing, safety essential etc. Our team captain will follow down river and meet us at checkpoints. He can only exchange water bottles and give us ice. The Safari is nicely called the "World's Toughest Canoe Race" and from the stories I have heard I can certainly understand why it has that reputation. Joy and I have paddled together for about 7 years mostly in kayaks and we are both excited to take on this personal challenge.
Stay tuned for updates on the blog of training adventures and Safari stories...
